The Hunger Mountain Boys at Caffe Lena

This past Sunday I went to see one of my favorite bands ever, The Hunger Mountain Boys. They were playing at one of my favorite venues, Caffe Lena, in Saratoga Springs, NY. I love Caffe Lena because it’s an incredibly intimate space, and although I usually call up months in advance to reserve a table as close to the stage as possible, there really isn’t a bad seat in the place. Caffe Lena is the only venue I’ve ever been to that I can say that about. As for the Hunger Mountain Boys… I first saw them quite a few years ago. Back then, it was just Teddy Weber (guitar, National Steel guitar, and vocals) and Kip Beacco (mandolin, fiddle, Parlor guitar and vocals). Since then they’ve added a third member, Matt Downing, on upright bass. They play mainly traditional bluegrass music, drawing inspiration from the blues and swing as well. They write a good deal of the songs they play, and most times it’s hard to tell the Hunger Mountain Boys’ originals from some of the older traditional stuff. They always put on a great show, and Sunday was no exception. Teddy and Matt also play with a Jazz/Western Swing band called The Blue Ribbon Boys, so keep your eyes peeled for them as well. And, on top of that, Teddy plays regularly with the self-proclaimed “Vaudvillian-Ragtime-Jugband-Hillbilly-Blues-Swing” band called The Wiyos. I’m actually going to see them this Saturday in Rhode Island, so you can plan on hearing about that show… Anyway, you can find The Hunger Mountain Boys at www.hungermountainboys.com or www.myspace.com/hungermountainboys
